Oreo Cookies and Milk – 5×7 Original Oil Painting
Who can resist “Double Stuf” Oreo Cookies??? (Yes, it’s really one “F”, not two.) With a nice, cold glass of WHOLE milk???!!!
I haven’t done much food photography lately, so it was fun to dust off my flash and shoot this still life of cookies and milk. Of course, I had to take a bite.
Flash! Oh-ohhhh!
In my opinion, a painting or drawing is only as good as its reference. After setting up this Oreo Cookie still life and taking about 20 or 30 boring pictures with my iphone, I realized I needed to put in a little extra effort. I tried a few different colored backgrounds before settling on the reddish-pink one. I also needed a better light source, so I dug out one of my small Speedlight flashes, loaded it with fresh batteries, and mounted it onto a tripod. That’s how I was able to create the dramatic splash of light on the red background, and behind the cookies and glass of milk. It’s one of the advantages of using a flash. If I was working “from life” I wouldn’t have been able to get the same effect. That’s my excuse… and I’m sticking with it! 🙂
Painting Surface
I’ve also been experimenting with different painting surfaces and used a 5×7 Ampersand Gessobord panel for this painting. Gessobord panels are pre-primed with a semi-smooth, fine-tooth acrylic gesso, and made from sustainable forest products; and formaldehyde-free… bonus! So far, this is one of my favorite painting surfaces. I also like primed linen panels, but that’s for another painting!
